Breathwork & The Alchemical Process

Breathwork & The Alchemical Process

This is the final blog post in the Alchemy for Transformation series. Here are the links to part 1 & part 2.

You may be wondering what the connection is between the alchemical processes and breathwork for expanded states of awareness. Connections have been made below with the 5 remaining alchemy processes not mentioned in my 2 previous articles on alchemy. Sublimation, Separation, Coagulation, Conjunction and Magnum Opus (ie. The 'Great Work') are important stages in the breathwork process, and knowledge of them and how they work in our psyches helps us better understand and integrate our experiences gained from breathwork sessions.

Sublimatio (Sublimation)
This stage represents the upward movement of the purified elements of the self, often depicted as vapors or gases. Sublimatio is associated with the release of spiritual and creative energies, the transcendence of earthly limitations, and the pursuit of higher states of consciousness.
In the context of breathwork, sublimatio represents the upward movement of energy and consciousness. As one engages in deep and intentional breathing, stagnant energies are released, and a sense of expansion and elevation emerges. This stage corresponds to the experience of transcending everyday limitations, accessing higher states of consciousness, and tapping into spiritual and creative energies that reside within.

Separatio (Separation)
Separatio signifies the process of separating and distinguishing different elements within the alchemical work. It involves discernment and the recognition of the diverse aspects of the self or the psyche. This stage aims to separate the valuable from the impure, allowing for further refinement and transformation.

Separatio, in the realm of breathwork, signifies the process of discernment and distinguishing different aspects within oneself. Through the breath, individuals gain clarity and insight into their thoughts, emotions, and patterns. This stage allows for the separation of the valuable from the impure, enabling individuals to let go of limiting beliefs, old patterns, and negative energies. It is a transformative stage that fosters self-awareness and the liberation of one's authentic self.

Coagulatio (Coagulation)
Coagulatio represents the stage of solidification or coming together. It signifies the integration of purified elements into a cohesive whole. This stage is associated with the unification of opposites, the harmonization of conflicting aspects within the self, and the establishment of a new, balanced state of being.

Coagulatio, when related to breathwork, symbolizes the stage of integration and unity. Through the breath, fragmented aspects of the self are brought together, harmonizing conflicting energies and creating a sense of wholeness. This stage is marked by the integration of body, mind, and spirit, fostering balance and a deep inner alignment. Coagulatio leads to a more coherent and cohesive experience of being, allowing for greater self-acceptance and self-love.

Conjunctio (Conjunction)
Conjunctio, also known as the sacred marriage, symbolizes the union of opposing forces or principles within the alchemical work. It represents the integration of masculine and feminine energies, the union of conscious and unconscious aspects, and the attainment of inner wholeness.

Conjunctio, within the realm of breathwork, represents the sacred union of opposites and the integration of polarities. Through the breath, one connects with the masculine and feminine energies within, bringing them into harmony. This stage also involves the integration of conscious and unconscious aspects of the self, fostering a deeper understanding of one's inner dynamics. Conjunctio leads to the attainment of inner wholeness, balance, and a profound sense of unity.

Magnum Opus (Great Work)
Magnum Opus refers to the overall process of the alchemical transformation itself. It represents the grand culmination of the entire alchemical journey, wherein the alchemist achieves the ultimate goal of personal and spiritual transformation. This stage signifies the realization of the alchemical purpose and the attainment of a higher state of being.

In the context of breathwork, the Magnum Opus refers to the entire transformative process and journey of self-discovery. It can represent the culmination of personal and spiritual growth achieved through consistent breathwork practice. The Magnum Opus signifies the profound integration of all the stages, resulting in the realization of one's highest potential, purpose, and the attainment of a transcendent state of being.

In the practice of breathwork, these additional stages mirror the complexity and depth of the alchemical process. Through intentional breathing, individuals engage in the transformative journey of sublimation, separation, coagulation, conjunction, and the ultimate realization of the Magnum Opus. Breathwork serves as a powerful tool for personal growth, self-realization, and the alchemical transformation of the self and the psyche.

* Final note: not all alchemical texts or practitioners necessarily include these stages in their descriptions. The alchemical journey is highly symbolic and multifaceted, the stages can vary depending on different interpretations and traditions.
